Three Bridgwater & Taunton College Sports Turf and Greenkeeping students have beaten off competition from six other colleges to win a national competition at the NEC in Birmingham.

Simon Cook, Jacob Camplin and Ryan Tate were selected to take part in the SALTEX College Cup – an academic test of turf management knowledge for student competitors who are enrolled at a college on a relevant course.

The competition consisted of a turf knowledge quiz and turf/seed idents for 90 minutes, followed by a case study presentation and questions from a panel of four judges including Neil Stubley, Head of Courts and Horticulture at the All England Lawn Tennis Club Wimbledon.

The team did fantastically well to win the competition and each received a £50 Amazon voucher. The College’s Sports Turf Department was also awarded with a cheque for £500.

As part of the prize, Simon, Jacob and Ryan will travel with Cary Rawlings, their trainer/assessor, to Wimbledon during the practice week before the Championships for a behind the scenes tour with Neil and to get an in depth look at preparations for the tournament.
