Team BC Netball had to get straight back into game mode after the Christmas break with a match to start the New Year against St. Brendan's College.
The first quarter saw well executed tactics and formations by all the players on the court which allowed Team BC to take an early lead 13 – 5. Although, St. Brendan's didn't let this gap widen any further and came back fighting in the second quarter, forcing errors on both ends of the court.
Well timed interceptions from defensive players Saskia Middleton (GD) and Katy Tasker (GK), and the delaying of the opposition by Kaitn Walker (WD) kept Team BC in contention, giving them a chance to make the most of every opportunity to score. Consistent shooting from Aerin Phillips (GS) increased the score line and kept St. Brendan's chasing.
Going into the second half, changes to Team BC offered alternative options when bringing the ball down the court. Jessie Venning (WA) and Tilly Heal (C) created some great movement while Hannah Toal (GS) held her space well in the circle to provide a safe option for her team and shot well to keep Team BC in the lead. Laura Gibson changed positions at half time to Wing Defence and successfully applied pressure to the opposition causing them to force errors.
Going into the final quarter, St. Brendan's did not give up, making it hard for Team BC to maintain the lead. However, Charlie Gilbert secured some critical goals for the Team BC side and Amy Knight (C) kept control of the game, providing a strong link between defence and attack. Defensive pressure from Chelsie Webster (GK) helped to keep St Brendan’s at bay resulting in the first victory of 2015 for Team BC, winning 35 – 31.
