University Centre Somerset (UCS) is proud to announce the launch of its new Foundation and BSc (Hons) degrees in Animal Management, Ecology and Conservation, available starting this September 2023.
The new programmes, validated by The Open University, replace the existing Animal Management and Wildlife Conservation degrees. They will provide students with a broad foundation across animal management, ecology, conservation, and environmental disciplines.
Students will learn about ecological principles, habitat management, animal behaviour, welfare, ethics, evolution, sustainability, and human impacts on the environment.
A key feature of the programmes is the emphasis on fieldwork, research skills, and work-based learning. The module specification includes Practical Conservation Skills and Field & Behavioural Monitoring Techniques. The programmes also require students to complete a minimum 100 hours of industry experience to develop their employability.
Assessment methods have been updated to include technical reports, oral presentations, research projects, and data analysis exercises. This equips students with versatile skills in scientific communication, critical thinking, and independent research.
Students additionally have the flexibility to customise their degree with optional modules in areas like Evolution & Adaptation, British Wildlife, and Animals in Society. This allows them to align studies closely with their interests and career goals.
With fieldwork, industry placements, modern facilities at the Animal Management Centre and experienced teaching staff, the programme provides interactive training grounded in real-world application. Students will gain interdisciplinary skills and experience enabling them to contribute meaningfully to conservation, sustainability, and the protection of nature and wildlife.
