Students studying the Level 2 Public and Emergency Services course at Bridgwater College were recently given a fantastic opportunity to visit HMS Flying Fox in Bristol to meet members of the Royal Navy.

The students took part in numerous activities during their visit, including the opportunity to spend time in a full size life raft, which was described as a very claustrophobic and hot experience. The group also tried on a fire fighters uniform.  All members of the Royal Navy are trained to be able to fight fires as they are at sea so frequently.

Student Paul Grant, from Burnham-on-Sea said,

“It was great to try on the fire-fighting kit used in the Royal Navy, though I couldn’t believe how heavy it was. The visit has inspired me to apply for the Royal Naval reserves.”

Tyne Govier, Course Leader for Public and Emergency Services at Bridgwater College added,

“It was an inspirational day for the students; being on the base, talking to the personnel and experiencing the equipment and scenarios that may face them has captured their imagination and in some cases it has even aspired them to sign up as a Royal Navy Reserve, a fantastic stepping stone towards a career in the Armed Services.”
