Record numbers of visitors have attended the latest Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) Cannington campus open event, the first to be held since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

More than twice the average number of attendees came to the dedicated campus for land-based and clean energy (nuclear), keen to learn about the courses, meet staff and students, and see the unrivalled facilities.

Guests were able to hear talks and tour sites including Rodway Farm, a 200-hectare mixed farm which is rated in the top 5% of farms within the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group, the Animal Management Centre, home to an extensive collection of birds and animals, and the Equine Centre, which includes a BHS-approved riding school. Adults and school leavers considering courses in Horticulture could explore the award-winning Walled Gardens.

Visitors interested in Clean Energy careers could see the multi-million pound National College for Nuclear (NCfN), one of five National Colleges delivering high-level technical training to thousands of learners around the country. This state-of-the-art Centre includes virtual reality environment, reactor simulator, realistic working environment, labs and more, enabling students to gain valuable training ready for successful careers in this sector.

Expert support staff were also on hand to answer questions about accommodation, transport and work experience, as well as BTC’s student support and wellbeing services.

Jason Gunningham, Assistant Principal for Land-based, Sport and Foundation Studies at BTC said

We are delighted that so many people seized this opportunity to see the excellent facilities at Cannington campus. We’re very proud of what we can offer our students, encompassing cutting-edge technology, industry-standard training areas, and a collection of domestic and exotic animals rarely seen in an educational setting. Feedback has been very positive and we look forward to welcoming many of the day’s visitors as new students next autumn.

The next open event at BTC’s Cannington campus is on Saturday 22 January 2022. Registration is essential. For more information about this and events at BTC’s Bridgwater and Taunton campuses, visit our Events page.
