For a number of years Rodway Young Farmers Club (YFC) and Bridgwater College have held a charity event which takes place in spring each year. The event consists of a number of different tractors and students cultivating the land ready for maize while raising money for charity.
This year however, they wanted to increase the amount of land cultivated and double the amount raised. Rodway YFC planned a number of activities to start collecting money at events such as Lambing Funday and asking local companies and businesses for sponsorship. A team of students were given the task to ask the dealerships for tractor and machinery to use at the event.
Many thanks to the dealers and local contractor who cooperated and supported the event: SJH Machinery, H. Curtis & Sons, Uphill & Sons, James Pryce, Hawkins, Hamblys, Bigwoods Agri and Dave Gardner, Agricultural Contractor.
Rodway Farm Manager, Steve Jones organised for approximately 96 acres to be cultivated and we were very pleased with the achievements of Rodway YFC. £2,900 was raised and is to be split between Cancer Research and R.A.B.I. Once all the money and pledges have been collected the total will be around £3,200.
Alan Johnson Section Leader for Agriculture and Food said,
“For Rodway YFC this is a massive achievement of which we are very proud. This also gives us a major challenge to exceed this year’s achievement.”
This event was also supervised and supported by Bridgwater College’s Agricultural and Student Liaison teams, with the main leaders being Shane Plowright and Alan Williams who supporting the event throughout the day and during the early hours of Thursday morning.
Shane Plowright said,
“I would like to say a big thank you to my colleagues for helping to supervise the students during the event. If there wasn’t any supervision the event wouldn’t be allowed to function. The students worked very well organising the event, liaising with dealers to organise tractors and machinery and collecting generous donations from everyone who donated. The students were very dedicated and all took part to make the charity event work.”
