For the third year in a row, Somerset Willow Company are supporting the Bridgwater Fireworks display by donating a willow guy which will be ceremoniously lit at the start of the event. Uniquely this year a replica has also been produced that will lead the prestigious procession at the Bridgwater Carnival.

Production of the guy started several months ago at the Somerset Willow factory in Bridgwater, and this year has provided a unique opportunity for their two apprentices who are supported by Bridgwater College, to get involved. Heidi Hill from Somerset Willow said,

“In conjunction with Bridgwater College we appointed our first apprentice, Sam Bullion, back in January; he is doing really well. It is hard when new staff start as they have to learn the basic and ancient craft of weaving before they have the skills to progress on to making our more luxury and complex products. This can take five years or more, so a lot of time and investment by us, which is why we really value our staff.

“We didn’t have any apprentices when we built the guy last year, so this year has provided a unique and interesting project for Sam and Daniel, who is our more recently appointed apprentice, to get involved. Forming something from nothing takes time and skill, and they have both been able to help with the cape and belt and really enjoyed being a part of it. I think they are pleased we have made two, as one will be burnt!”

Sam said,

“I’m really enjoying my Apprenticeship. The modules that I have completed so far have helped me with the health and safety aspect of my workplace, but as I become more skilled in my weaving I’m looking forward to the more advanced modules of my Apprenticeship programme. The Somerset Willow Company have given me plenty of time away from my normal work time in order to complete my assignments, which has been really good.”
