20 students studying Public Services took part in the annual Pier Cellars Cup Challenge in Cawsand, Cornwall.
The event is run by the Royal Navy and is aimed at showing students the challenges faced by Naval recruits while on basic training. There is a competitive, fun element to it as Bridgwater College were up against teams from Truro College and Bicton Military Academy. The students were set tasks such as raft building, sea swimming, deck hockey matches, tug of war and a Sod’s Opera where they perform a five-minute piece devised solely by themselves to the other teams.
Students also ventured out on a 10k orienteering exercise around the beautiful Rame Head Peninsula with the event concluding with a talk from a Submariner explaining his role within the Navy whilst working on submarines. The students were also given opportunities to talk with serving Royal Marines and Seamen who were on hand to answer any questions they had regarding a career in the Royal Navy.
The experience was extremely beneficial for all involved but unfortunately the team didn’t win on this occasion. Student Tilly Davin of Taunton said,
“The whole experience was great fun and exhausting but well worth it.”
Ethan Lawson, of Bridgwater said,
“I loved every minute of it and want to go back as soon as possible!”
