Bridgwater College’s Team BC Ladies Volleyball team recently took part in the AoC South West Regional Championships at PETROC College in Barnstaple in the hope of representing the region in the National Championship, which is taking place in Newcastle in April.
The team of eight, were selected after taking part in a volleyball enrichment programme at Bridgwater College, competing against two teams, the host College and Richard Huish College from Taunton, the game was played in a five set structure.
The first game was against the reigning National Champions, PETROC College. The team started well, following their game plan that allowed them to play to their strengths. The more experienced opposition battled through winning the first set 25 – 13. Unfortunately, the home team took control, playing an aggressive and clinical game, and winning the next two sets 25 – 10 and 25 – 11.
The second game was against Richard Huish College. Team BC controlled much of the first set with some powerful serving from Adrianna Balko and Klaudia Adamczyk. They were supported in defensive play by Serena Goodrum, Ruby Arberry and Esme Tyler, resulting in the team winning the set 25 – 22. Richard Huish went on to win the next three sets but the team were extremely proud of their performance.
Student, Becky Proctor, from Highbridge said,
“I really enjoyed my experience at the volleyball tournament. Although we didn’t win, we played well as a team and accomplished our aims to improve our skills.”
Team Captain Nesta Patrick, from Weston-super-Mare added,
“The volleyball tournament was a great experience. It was our first tournament as a team, we worked very well together. Even though we didn’t win on this occasion, our skills have improved remarkably and with the help of Tyne I am sure we will come back even better.”
Tyne Govier, Team BC Volleyball coach at Bridgwater College commented,
“It was great to see the team perform so well in unfamiliar surroundings. They played some competitive volleyball against opponents that have a lot more experience. We will look to continue with our progress and look forward to more games and more success in the future.”
