WSL Academy Cup – 2nd Leg

Yeovil Town Women FC x Team BTC Dual Career Academy v West Ham

Our Yeovil Town Women FC Dual Career Academy squad took a long journey to London to play West Ham United Women on Wednesday looking to overcome a deficit incurred from the first leg.

The game started with five Yeovil Town Women Youth Academy U16s making the step up to U21.

The game started bright with Megan Wood taking control of the midfield and Hannah Maloney making it difficult for anyone to cause problems to the Yeovil defence. The defensive unit were resolute under spells of pressure to keep West Ham at bay.

As the game went on Yeovil Women grew more confident and adapted well playing very good football as West Ham changed to a more pressing style.

As Yeovil created more and more chances it was only a matter of time before they broke the deadlock. Great combination play down the left hand side between Connie Pengelly and Megan Wood found the latter with the ball at her feet and her bullet of an effort flew straight past the West Ham goalkeeper.

West Ham responded immediately with attacking pressure but the defence of Jennie Habbits, Abi Barker, TJ Gauvain and Freya Gudge continued to frustrate the home side.

Half-Time: West Ham United Women FC 0 – 1 Yeovil Town Women FC

Yeovil Academy came out firing in the second half with early chances on the counter. Jasmine Allen and to Connie Pengelly who were just short of adding goals to the tally!

Yeovil soon were to add to their tally. A free kick from distance by Megan Wood alluded everyone in the box and ricocheted off the post for West Ham to clear. The clearance only went as far as Wood again whose looping ball finds the ambitious effort of Connie Pengelly’s overhead kick which nestle in the back of the net.

West Ham continued to push for a goal but Yeovil maintained their clean sheet to win the leg but not the tie.

Full-Time: West Ham United Women FC 0 – 2 Yeovil Town Women FC

Head Coach Phil Hubbard commented on the game “it wasn’t as much about the result but the application and about playing our way. Seeing the girls have that mentally to adapt and drive forward was unbelievable and we have shown what we can do. The future is bright for both this collaborative academy programme with girls featuring in the team today who are becoming full-time student-athletes next year.”
