SGS VS BTC Match Report
Women’s Football travelled to a strong SGS College looking to start their season with a positive result.
The start of the game was cagey with both teams fighting for spells of possession. The first chance fell after 20 minutes when the ball broke in behind the defensive line of Habbits and Banfield to the onrushing forward who was denied by a superb save from the commanding Mitchell.
The game then started to slow as the SGS team committed a number of fouls on Bell, Markham and Banfield. Whilst the hungry defensive work of Owens, Pole and Stirrup slowed any momentum from the opposing team. The first goal of the game went the way of the home side, when the ball dropped kindly in midfield before a delicate lofted ball allowed the forward to beat the offside trap and coolly slide the ball round Mitchell.
Bridgwater ended the half on top with a number of opportunities at goal, Bedford had a shot blocked on the line following a Ford cross, then Pole stole the ball of the SGS midfield and slid an exquisite pass for Markham to race onto before being bundled to the ground inside the box by the recovering defender much to the dismay of the of the surrounding BTC players.
Half time – SGS 1-0 BTC
The second half saw the introducing of Nicholls for the injured Ford. Nicholls quickly put her stamp onto the game after Stirrup stole the ball from the midfield and found Pole who released Nicholls who delicately floated the ball over the helpless SGS Keeper. From the restart, BTC needed a moment of magic from Mitchell who produced a sublime double save.
The remainder of the half saw the game drift by with both sides having good spells of possession with only BTC creating clear goal scoring opportunities. Webster and Garratt were introduced with 30 minutes to go and both worked tirelessly.
The dying moments of the game saw the best two chances of the stalemate. BTC were rewarded a free kick in the corner and the Asker delivery saw a desperate goal mouth scramble, which somehow fell into the keepers arms. This started a swift counter attack from SGS who hit the crossbar with the last kick of the game.
A controlled performance from BTC against a physical SGS side.
