BTC Occupational Traineeship in Steel Fixing students have been offered new jobs and Apprenticeships after completing their 6-week Traineeships.

The Traineeship ran for 6 weeks in conjunction with EDF, Bylor & The Education & Skills Funding Agency, and allowed students to gain new skills and knowledge relating to Steel Fixing, Groundworks and Health & Safety. The programme covered Steel Fixing & Construction Skills, CITB Health & Safety and Awareness, Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels, CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test and First Aid.

At the end of the course the students had achieved the qualifications needed to apply for a CSCS Green Labourer Card which enables them access to work on construction sites.

Since completing the course, three of the trainees have been offered General Operative roles with BYLOR. One trainee has been offered a Level 2 Steel Fixing Apprenticeship with BYLOR at HPC and another is through to the second stage of interviews with Wessex Water for a Distribution Inspector role.

Macauley Davis, 17, was studying a Level 1 course at BTC when he saw the Traineeship, he felt this was a great opportunity as he was usure what he wanted to do. Macauley really struggled with College before the Traineeship as he wasn’t sure which direction he wanted to go in. Since completing the qualification he has started employment as a Civil Engineering Groundworker with CT Civils based in Burnham on Sea. They work all over the country and Macauley is currently on his first job, lodging away from home and loving it.
