We are delighted to share the news that BA (Hons) Graphic Media and Communication student Sarah Kellock has won a D&AD New Blood Award. This is the third time in four years that a University Centre Somerset student has been recognised by New Blood for their achievements, demonstrating the continued success and high calibre of students that this particular UCS course attracts.

D&AD (Design and Art Direction) New Blood exists to champion, educate and support emerging creative talent from any walk of life to get a foothold in the creative world. With over 3,000 universities and colleges every year accessing the curriculum, including University Centre Somerset, the New Blood programmes give emerging creatives around the world the opportunity to hone their skills in line with the ever changing industry landscape.

The New Blood Awards give aspiring young creatives a platform to gain experience solving a client brief, while showcasing their work and having it judged by some of the industry’s most prominent figures, as well as a chance to win a prestigious Pencil.

Sarah’s entry, in the category sponsored by giffgaff, was the creation of a copy-led campaign that celebrates giffgaff’s story and what makes them unique. The response had to be digitally-led and written to excite, engage and intrigue an audience about the brand.

Sarah’s outcome was a concept piece in the form of an online advert with additional commentary. She had discovered that giffgaff is an ancient Scottish word meaning ‘for mutual benefit’ and her chosen storyline enabled her to accentuate the brand values, as well as the innovative way in which the brand operates.

The advert was filmed around the Bridgwater & Taunton canal at Firepool in Taunton, which was a perfect location as it combined rural and urban elements including green spaces, walls, bridges and canals. The location emphasises the links between communities across the UK and is in keeping with the storyline that relates a part of history to present day.
