Today (Friday 9 March), our year two Sport and Exercise Science students are travelling to Port Elizabeth, South Africa for an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity.
Students will be working with the charity “United Through Sport” where they will be coaching a variety of sports in the townships. Students have been preparing for the trip for months, ensuring that their planned coaching sessions are fun and engaging for the children to enjoy.
Preparations have also included a variety of different fundraising activities, including; cake sales, lottery, raffles, a 24 Hour Football Match and Bag Packs at the local Morrison’s store in Bridgwater. Fundraising is essential as these sufficient funds not only purchase additional equipment and kit, but also enables the students to run a fantastic sport tournament for the local schools of the township. All of the students and accompanying staff members will have meals provided on the day also.
As well as coaching and delivering outstanding coaching sessions, students will also participate in teaching in the local schools, where they will aim to develop the Maths, English and Science knowledge of the local students. They will also help to deliver workshops where students can develop essential life skills during after schools clubs. The students are really looking forwards to this amazing trip and the eye opening experiences that they will share together.
Alex Leach, Course Leader for Sport and Exercise Science said,
“I would like to thank the local businesses and community who have provided excellent support, and without this the trip would not be able to take place. A big thank you to Morrison’s in Bridgwater for their continued support of the trip through enabling the students to complete bag pack sessions. Also we would like to thank all of the companies who support the sponsorship raffle, with the winners being local business, Levels Best.”
