Many regard The Arts House at our Taunton campus as a local landmark. Crafted by a local Somerset architect, it features many unique facilities designed to elevate our Art, Design and Media educational offerings – including a kiln, green room, studios, media make-up facilities, and a dedicated space for University Centre Somerset (UCS) students.
The Realm is a place to engage with creative employers to gain insight into the digital skills gap and explore how educational programmes can align more closely with industry demands. A place that fosters collaboration between creative employers and the College by inviting industry professionals to share their expertise through a mix of live projects, mentorship programmes, work experience, and workshops.
Our fashion manufacture room houses industrial sewing machines, overlockers, leather machines and cover seamers. Large pattern and cutting tables are available as well as plenty of mannequins and industrial irons.
In the fabric print room, students can design and experiment with fabric and techniques such as flocking, foiling, devoré and sublimation printing. There are also vacuum print tables and dyeing facilities.
A 3D room supporting laser cutting, digital fabric printing and digital embroidery gives students a variety of processes and techniques to mix and get creative with.
We also have a traditional print room for printing processes such as lino/ block printing, drypoint etching, monoprinting and collograph printing.
On the ground floor of the Arts House we have three purpose-built media make-up studios, including two professional-standard studio spaces with mirrored stations in each, and a workshop-based room with workbenches and ceiling extraction.
We also have a fume room where students can use processes such as fibre glass moulding and EasyFlo, and a specialist foam latex booth.
Workshop spaces include light and airy art studios with life drawing rooms. There are specialist, fully-equipped workshops for ceramics, casting, woodwork, metalwork and photography. Across all spaces there is plenty of scope for collaborative work with students from other creative courses.
The White Space Gallery on the ground floor is an exhibition space used by students throughout the year to showcase their work.
